MERCER7 MEETS… JESSICA DINER

Jessica Diner is a proud member of the Vogue family. Having spent eight years at Vogue as beauty and health editor, Jessica moved on to the role of content and creative director at Birchbox for three years. She was always interested in beauty, but came across her career path by chance when interning at Vanity Fair. She instantly fell in love with the beauty room, and that’s how her story began. After Birchbox, Jessica went back to Vogue in 2017 as a beauty and lifestyle director at an exciting time, with the new editor-in-chief Edward Enninful at the helm for this “new era” at British Vogue.

MERCER7 had the amazing opportunity to speak to Jessica during LFW and asked her a few questions about her style, beauty must haves and motherhood!

___________

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I would describe it as bohemian but chic.

GO-TO BRANDS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
I can’t live without Zara, I am obsessed with Zara. I own a lot of items from them, but at the slightly higher-end I love See By Chloe, Roksanda and Dodo Bar Or. She does lovely silk dresses to wear to the office. I always wear dresses, so I would say that the go to item in my wardrobe is a dress or a mini skirt and a blouse. I like to keep my outfits quite classic.

“Perseverance, dedication and a smile. I believe that if someone has the right attitude and energy you feed off that.” – JESSICA DINER

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE STYLE ADVICE?
My style advice is just be you. I feel like you can always tell when someone is wearing something they are not comfortable in, so I think wearing something which is an accurate representation of yourself and feels comfortable on you is always the best.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
That’s so difficult since there are so many things! I would definitely say concealer is something I can’t live without. I always have tired eyes from my baby and working loads, so concealer is my go to!

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GO INTO EDITORIALS / MAGAZINES / FASHION?
Perseverance, dedication and a smile. I believe that if someone has the right attitude and energy you feed off that. If you have interns coming in the office and they have the right attitude and energy, that already shows a lot. You can always learn the technicalities, but you can’t necessarily learn that sort of dedication and passion. You’ve got to feel it.

“Coming back to Vogue at a new time with a new staff and new energy is really exciting. I feel like it is the beginning of a new chapter which is truly exciting to be part of.” – JESSICA DINER

YOU’VE HAD AN IMPRESSIVE CAREER TO DATE. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
I think the highlight is coming back to Vogue in a era with a new editor. I worked at Vogue for 8 years and then I went away and worked at Birchbox, which was an amazing experience and I was there for almost 3 years. But I think now coming back to Vogue at a new time with a new staff and new energy is really exciting. I feel like it is the beginning of a new chapter, which is truly exciting to be part of.

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE MOTHERHOOD AND WORK?
I like the rhythm and the momentum of having my 9 to 5. But then it is just making sure that I carve out some time at the beginning and end of the day so that I am spending time with my son at least every day. I am with him in the morning, then I run to the office. I am totally dedicated in the day to the office, and then run home to him so that we have a bit of playtime before he goes to bed. I think also having an understanding partner who makes it all possible and is very supportive.
