Emily Murray is the founder and an editor of The Pink House. She is a successful business owner, a wife, and a mother. Her stunning house is featured in this interview, showing the pops of colour throughout, along with the playful wallpaper and neon lights. That’s what we call a happy space! Emily’s website has won the best interior design blog award and The Pink House has been featured in number of magazines from Grazia to Glamour.
“The Pink House is all about: taking interiors inspiration and advice from fabulous people and places, and using it to make your place amazing.” – Emily Murray
Read our interview with Emily and check out her website www.pinkhouse.co.uk and instagram for more interior inspiration, neon lights and gold details, which we love despite being addicted to all things monochrome.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GO FROM WORKING AS A JOURNALIST IN FASHION AND LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES TO LAUNCHING THE PINK HOUSE?
I knew I wanted to start my own business after having kids, and interiors is something I’ve always been into, since I built my childhood gang hut complete with guest bathroom and display shelf! It was important to me that I didn’t abandon my first love – writing – so starting up The Pink House seemed like a good way to combine my journalism career with my passion for gorgeous home interiors and travel destinations. It’s also proved to be a great way to get more into the styling side of things.
WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON LATELY?
Styling-wise, we’re creating and curating a bar for a huge fashion brand, which is very exciting – can’t wait for the big launch party! A recent blog post that’s been getting a lot of love is The Pink House Husband Styling Challenge – people seem to relate to the tribulations of having an other half who isn’t quite so enthusiastic about interior design…And we’ve also just styled and shot a feature about the actual, bricks-and-mortar Pink House, for one of my very favourite mags – so watch this (pinkhouse.co.uk) space!
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SHOOT OR COLLABORATION?
We wouldn’t say no to photographing Kate Moss’s place in the Cotswolds. Anyone who has a real sense of rock n roll style would be amazing.
FAVOURITE STORES (ONLINE AND OFF)?
When it comes to home decor I’m a massive fan of Buster + Punch’s motorbike-inspired rock chic aesthetic. Their Hooked lights are to die for – we have one in our living room – and their brass kitchen handles have transformed our cabinets. Then there’s their Rock Star cocktail cabinet: top of my dream wish list.
Fashion-wise, Laurie Lee Leather is obviously a fave – love her mix of vintage leather and off-beat typography. I used to work with her back in our advertising days and always admired her kooky sense of style.
On the high street you can’t beat a bit of River Island – Giles in the Oxford Street Style Studio has a knack of finding the coolest pieces that look just right – and much more expensive than they really are.
FAVOURITE WEBSITES OR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS YOU THINK WE SHOULD CHECK OUT?
I’ve just been to Ibiza and I loved wearing my new pineapple-and-pompom kaftan by Dilli Grey @dilli_grey, my new Instagram find. I’m keen to get my hands on their hot pink and gold throw, too. Right now I’m also crazy for Bag & Bones @bagandbones new kid-proof neon, which I also discovered via Instagram. I wrote a blog post about it here: http://www.pinkhouse.co.uk/blog/2016/6/8/new-bag-bones-kid-proof-neon
WHICH ITEM OF CLOTHING DO YOU WEAR THE MOST?
Stan Smith adidas trainers – essential for cycling to the office and running after the small – yet surprisingly fast – 3yo and 6yo Pink House Dwellers
YOUR GO-TO BRANDS FOR EVERYDAY DRESSING?
Jeans – either skinny Hudson denim, or loose and slouchy Diesels with turn ups, with Zadig & Voltaire metallic vests and fine knits, or my silk Pam & Gela star-print shirt. I’m also a big fan of Chinti + Parker cashmere, especially my loose sweater with ‘Love’ in pink neon. And I find it hard to stay away from my Bella Freud merino jumper collection too. Oh and Isabel Marant Etoile skater skirts for warm days.
WHO’S STYLE DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST?
Probably Laurie’s – @laurieleeleather – the girl’s just got it. So exciting to see her jackets will be available at Selfridges from 16 September during London Fashion Week.
YOUR OBVIOUSLY HAVE A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE JUGGLING WORK AND YOUR FAMILY LIFE. HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH IT ALL AND WHAT IS THE SECRET TO WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
We’re very lucky to have an amazing nanny who is very patient and flexible with her time. My 6yo goes to a school with an excellent after-school club too, and my parents are round the corner for emergencies – my 3yo goes to nursery 2 days a week as well. There’s no way I could fit everything in without this kind of childcare support, especially as my husband is abroad for work quite a bit. But I make sure I keep one day a week aside just to spend with the kids, and the whole weekend too. I try to finish work in time to pick up from school/nursery where possible as well. Just constantly trying to keep everyone happy – not sure if there’s any secret – it’s just an ongoing process you have to work hard at. But it’s well worth it!
WHAT’S ON YOUR PLAYLIST?
Whatever’s on Radio 1 or Radio 6 Music. I don’t have time to create my own playlists!
TOP STYLE TIP?
Every outfit looks better with flats.
