TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BRAND THE NOR-FOLK?
My name is Fiona Burrage. Originally from Essex, I now live in Norwich, Norfolk with my husband, Bobby, and son Stanley. We live in a light and airy converted factory and, together, we co-run Nor-Folk. Nor-Folk is a graphic design-led lifestyle brand. We create clothes and homewares with a minimalist and Scandinavian aesthetic.
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND AESTHETIC?
We have a love of simplicity and that translates from interiors to fashion. With our apparel we distil messages down into the simplest and most powerful form, removing all the clutter and noise. Our ‘house style’ is clean and minimal with a muted palette.
WE LOVE YOUR STYLE AND NOR-FOLK’S ‘LESS IS MORE’ APPROACH TO DESIGN. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
Life. Stanley is a huge muse for everything I do but I’m also inspired by people. One of the new pieces I’m working on right now has been inspired by the global growth of the brand. I never think ‘today I am going to come up with a design’ – instead, I come up with new concepts when I’m doing something more tedious, like brushing my teeth!
ADVICE FOR THE UP-AND-COMING FASHION DESIGNERS OUT THERE OR ASPIRING CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS?
Trust your gut instincts. If it doesn’t feel right then it’s probably not.
YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?
Once a week I do a one-to-one pilates session to work on my posture. I’ve also started playing football again and, aside of spending time with friends and family, it’s the only way I can properly switch off from work. No phones allowed on the pitch!
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SHOOT OR COLLABORATION?
I’d love to do something visual with COS from an art direction perspective. They do some incredible videos and blend design, art and fashion seamlessly.
