MERCER7 MEETS… GRL PWR GANG

GRLPWR GANG is a collective of influential women coming together because they have one very important thing in common and they want to shout it from the rooftops – a passion for supporting women in the creative industries and female empowerment.

The founders Kirsti Hadley and Kylie Griffiths of GRL PWR GANG @grlpwrgang are the creators of a new all-female collective with two goals: empower women to get creative and promote opportunity for women within the arts industries. They provide opportunity for like-minded ladies to come together for girl-chat, media networking, creative support, team projects and sharing ideas.

Coming from art and design background, I was really excited when I discovered them earlier this year.

Please read our interview with the coolest girls in town and join the movement.

TELL US ABOUT GRLPWR GANG?

GRLPWR GANG is an inclusive (not exclusive) gang of girls working within the creative industries, collaborating on projects together and helping the next generation of female creatives

YOUR MISSION IS TO EMPOWER AND PROMOTE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA AND WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT TO YOU TO CREATE ALL-FEMALE COLLECTIVE?

In our fields so many of us lead a solitary existence being freelance so we wanted to create a space where like minded creative ladies could network, collaborate and create together but also have each others backs and pass on their collective knowledge to the next gen. In the current climate where arts funding is being slashed left right and centre and only privileged kids can afford uni we wanted to do our bit to help redress the balance. Thats why we try as much as possible to keep our events free of charge. It just seemed like a no brainer to us.

WHAT DOES GIRL POWER MEAN TO YOU?

It means building one another up instead of knocking one another down and it means each generation of women making it easier and better to be a female in the next decade. Where the hell would we be without The Sufragettes? Small actions make big changes. Our hasthtag is #grlshelpinggrls and that’s it in a nutshell.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FOR ALL THE ASPIRING YOUNG CREATIVES OUT THERE?

Work hard, be nice, don’t be a dick. It’s a small world, make sure people remember you for the right reasons.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Being lucky enough to get paid PROPERLY to do what you love doing whatever that is. Feeling happy, challenged and inspired at work and at home, with a good life work balance. Being financially secure.

YOU BOTH HAVE AMAZING CAREERS AND CREATIVE BACKGROUNDS, (KYLIE IS A SUCCESSFUL FASHION AND MUSIC STYLIST AND A DJ @maliandkylie. KIRSTI IS AN EVENTS GURU AND A CONSULTANT REPRESENTING ARTISTS AND BRANDS WITHIN LONDON’S ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY @kirstiinternational) HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH IT ALL AND WHAT’S THE SECRET TO WORK/LIFE BALANCE?

Ha there is no secret – its a constant battle that changes all the time and I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love my family and I love my career – obv family comes first but i’d definitely be more than a little lost without my work.

Right now is a perfect example, Emails sometimes get sent at 10pm in order to enjoy the 3.15pm – 8pm section of the day with the kiddo. We all do what we need to do don’t we

YOU BOTH, OBVIOUSLY VERY BUSY. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Kirsti: mainly mum life! Spending as much QUALITY time with my 5 year old and his dad is my main priority when not working. I’ve always been a nut bag trying to do a million things at once – its only this last year i’ve started to realise I need to place as much value on my down time as much as the hectic.

LET’S TALK ABOUT STYLE AND MUSIC ICONS… WHO DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST AND WHY?

Kirsti – I love Stevie Nicks, Dolly Parton, Kate Moss. Time less style, don’t give a shit attitude, brilliant, ballsy women

WHAT’S ON YOUR PLAYLIST?

Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, Bobbi Gentry and I love a bit of Sugababes – a very underrated band in my opinion

FAVOURITE QUOTE OR WORDS YOU LIVE BY?

If you don’t ask you don’t get!

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON LATELY?

We’ve been focusing heavily on making our talks as brilliant as possible and on planning our upcoming GRLPWR music business school – all of which are in partnership with Smashbox – watch this space – all will be revealed very soon! We’ve also been lucky enough to work on 2 super fun projects with River Island and we are in the process of organising a really important shoot for Breast Cancer Awareness which we are honoured to have been asked to be a part of.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

We want grlpwr gang to be a global movement that affects change and connects girls not just in this country but worldwide, a force that unites creative women all over the globe. Females everywhere coming together, connecting, creating, collaborating, making magic happen together.

Now THAT would be the dream collab.

THE LAST TWO QUESTIONS ARE ABOUT FASHION. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Kirsti: I’m a bit of a bag lady, I have a bit of everything in my wardrobe but I’m a sucker for denim, leather, sequins and animal print and definitely always veer towards the seventies.
