With Spring in full force, I wanted to share some tips on curating the ultimate capsule wardrobe. By organising and decluttering your wardrobe, it makes dressing and creating outfits so simple, requiring minimal effort to maintain a chic and timeless style.
I like to think of my wardrobe as a puzzle and create a list of staple items that are interchangeable from season to season. A great tip is to keep your wardrobe well balanced with a mixture of versatile basics, such as core neutral pieces (think camisoles, bodysuits and trousers) and a few statement items that can be mixed and matched together. My favourite spring staples include a trench coat, leather and denim jackets, basic t-shirts, well-fitting trousers and day-to-night dress options. Investing in high-quality basics is key as there are endless ways to style them and will stay in your wardrobe for years.
Please find below a checklist of items to tick off to help you create your perfect capsule wardrobe. You can go through to see what pieces you already own, and what is missing from your puzzle!
A camisole is a perfect layering option. My favourite would be a silk cami, which can be styled in endless ways from day to night.
Another great layering piece that can be styled with jeans and sneakers for a casual daytime look or a silk slip skirt and heels for the evening. I also wear mine under jumpers.
Having a selection of basic t-shirts in your wardrobe is an absolute must for your capsule wardrobe! I like to stick to three colours: white, grey and black, as these go with everything and can be carried from season to season.
Bodysuits are a staple for curating a seamless, put-together look. A useful piece that can be dressed up or down with different accessories.
For me, a sweatshirt is the ultimate comfort piece that can be thrown on with a pair of matching joggers and a trench or a blazer for a chic but comfortable look!
Plain Jumpers (Neutral tones, White, Grey, Black)
Jumpers can be styled in multiple ways season after season, whether it’s a roll neck in the winter or a lighter merino wool crew-neck knit in the spring. My go-to colours would be white, grey, black, and neutral tones.
Slip Dresses / Skirts / Trousers
Slip dresses are one of the easiest items to style, in my opinion. You can style it with a beautiful pair of heels and a blazer for the evening or throw a jumper over the top for a more casual look. The same goes for slip skirts and trousers, a capsule wardrobe must-have!
A pair of well-fitted tailored trousers and a matching blazer is such a good look, one of my go-to outfits!
Another capsule wardrobe essential has to be a good-quality white shirt, as it always looks super clean and fresh, whatever the season. Shirts and blouses are also great for transitional layering, and you can choose from silk, satin or cotton styles.
The Little Black Dress, is one of my favourites! An LBD is so useful to have and can be styled in multiple ways, with lighter accessories in the spring/summer seasons and darker for autumn/winter. You can never go wrong with a black dress, and it works for any occasion.
If you know me, you know I love a blazer as it gives any outfit an element of sophistication and effortlessly cool vibe. I like to have a good quality blazer in all the staple colours such as black, cream, and neutral tones.
Leggings are a capsule wardrobe go-to as they are perfect for the days you want to be comfortable. A simple pair of black leggings can be styled with a jumper/shirt for an easy daytime look, or you can go for a pair of leather leggings to dress it up!
Jeans / denim jumpsuits / denim shorts
Denim items such as jeans, jumpsuits and shorts are a staple all year round as they are super easy to wear and style, from school-run to brunch with friends.
A denim jacket is great for transitional seasons since they’re light and can be layered easily. Shackets are a big thing at the moment, and are a staple for this time of year.
You can edge up any outfit with a leather jacket! I’ve picked out some of my favourites in a variety of styles below. Take a look at my full Leather jacket edit HERE.
Trench coats work all year round (except summer of course), instantly making any outfit look chic and timeless. I would recommend going for a black or neutral-tone trench, as they’re the most versatile in terms of styling.
Bags (Black, Neutral Tones)
A bag is the ultimate finishing touch to any outfit. Having a selection of bags, from cross-body to totes is a must!
Loafers (Black, Neutral Tones)
When it comes to shoes, I like to have a selection of different styles such as loafers, boots, and heels. Below I’ve picked some of my favourite loafers, which are an essential transitional footwear item.
